Why Footprints?

Based on Piaget’s Theory of Adolescent Development not only are displaced emotions of depression, hopelessness, abandonment and fear of not belonging prevalent during the adolescent years, they are amplified due to puberty and hormonal changes. As individuals transition into adolescence, they enter what is known as the 5th stage of psychosocial development- identity versus role confusion. This is the stage where they begin to ask one of the most important questions of their lives- “Who am I?”

The identity of a child between the ages of 10 and 17 is often shaped by what they see around them and how their peers view them. Footprints is determined to meet them right where they are. Extra-curricular activities offer a positive outlet and exposure to new ideas and experiences. These activities also promote healthy relationships, self- confidence, character development and increased work ethic.

According to a study published by the U.S Department of Commerce Economics and Statistics Administration (U.S Census Bureau), the life of a child is heavily influenced by school experiences and extra-curricular activities- both of which are critical factors in academic development, identity formation, and socialization. Children from low-income backgrounds are often at a socioeconomic disadvantage of which they have little control. This study highlights the invaluable benefits of participating in extra-curricular activities. Involvement in creative, academic and athletic programs outside of school is directly linked to higher academic performance, school engagement and increased self- confidence and self-awareness.

Footprints believes success is inevitable if children are afforded the opportunity to explore their interests, develop new skills and sharpen existing talents. Footprints is dedicated to supporting adolescents in the early, most critical stages of finding out who they are and who they want to be.

By covering the cost of participation, Footprints offers youth between the ages of 10 and 17 access to  extra-curricular programs. Footprints aims to ensure that each child has more opportunities to be productive than not.
